Crisp Fried Onion Rings

  • 2 large onions
  • 1 cup flour
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 tsp pepper
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • Vegetable oil

Cut onions in 1/2 inch slices. Place rings in large bowl. Cover with water and refrigerate 1 hour. Drain. Combine dry ingredients. Add egg and buttermilk, beating until smooth. Dip onion rings; fry until golden brown.
