Country Corn Bread

  • 2 cup plain meal
  • 3/4 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp soda
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1/4 cup bacon drippings or melted shortening
  • 1 1/2 cup buttermilk

Heat oven to 450°. Measure meal into mixing bowl; add remaining ingredients and stir until smooth. Pour batter into hot greased pan.

Bake 20 – 25 minutes until brown as desired on top.

For sweet milk bread, omit soda and add 3 teaspoons baking powder. Use 1 1/3 cups sweet milk.
