Carolyn Doster, Spearsville High

  • 2 cup flour
  • 2 tsp soda
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp ginger
  • 1/4 tsp ground cloves
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 3/4 cup shortening
  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 cup light molasses
  • Sugar

Blend together in small bowl the flour, soda, salt, and spices. In mixing bowl, add sugar to shortening; cream until light and fluffy. Add egg and molasses; beat well. Add the dry ingredients. Mix well. Shape dough into balls, using a rounded teaspoonful for each. Dip in sugar. Place on ungreased baking sheet, sugar side up.

Bake at 375° for 5 to 10 minutes, or until lightly browned.

Makes about 4 1/2 dozen.
