Fried Apple Pies

  • 1 (8 oz) package dried apples
  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • 3 cups cold water


  • 2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1 Tbsp sugar
  • 6 Tbsp butter
  • 1 egg yolk, slightly beaten
  • 1/3 cup milk

Cook dried apples in 3 cups cold water until tender. Add sugar and more water if needed. As apples cook in sugar, chop up with spoon until chunky. The apples will turn a light brown. Taste. Add more sugar if desired. Refrigerate to cool. Combine flour, salt, baking powder and sugar in a bowl. Cut in butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Mix egg yolk with milk and stir into mixture, adding only enough to hold the dough together.

Roll out pastry on a lightly floured surface. Put about 1 1/2 tablespoons apples in each pie. Seal edges of pies with cold water and fork dipped in flour.

Deep-fry until lightly browned on each side.
