Brown Caramel Filling

  • 2 1/2 cup sugar
  • 2 cups sweet milk
  • 1/2 cup butter

Put 1/2 cup sugar separate in an iron or granite saucepan, stir continuously over the fire until sugar first softens, then melts. Add to other ingredients and boil until it fall heavy from spoon. Add butter last. Flavor with vanilla and beat until it thickens enough to spread. Nuts May be added.
