Date-Nut Cookies

Drop Cookies
Christmas Cookies

  • 1 cup chopped pecans or walnuts
  • 1 cup chopped dates
  • 1 cup chopped candied cherries
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon cider vinegar
  • 1/2 cup butter, softened
  • 1 cup firmly packed brown sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

Combine pecans, dates, cherries, and 1/4 teaspoon salt, tossing well. Combine milk and vinegar; let stand 10 minutes.

Cream butter; gradually add sugar, beating well. Add egg, beating well. Combine 1 1 /2 cups flour, soda, and salt in a small mixing bowl. Add to creamed mixture alternately with milk mixture, beginning and ending with flour mixture. Stir in fruit mixture.

Drop dough by heaping teaspoonfuls 2 inches apart onto ungreased cookie sheets. Bake at 375° for 10 minutes or until lightly browned. Remove from cookie sheets immediately, and cool on wire racks. Store in airtight containers.

Yield: about 4 dozen.
