Brown and Serve French Bread

Breads and Rolls
Looking at Cooking and Garden Jobs with Mildred Swift

This bread comes in packages of two loaves. Slice bread in 3/4 inch slices, being careful not to cut all the way through. Prepare garlic butter, using 3/4 stick of butter of margarine per loaf. Place bread on a cooky sheet. In each slit, put a teaspoon of garlic butter. Put bread in oven with heat at lowest it can be turned. With a gas oven, just turn to “pilot”. Check the bread occasionally, but it’s best if it stays in the oven at least two hours. Just before serving, turn oven to 350 degrees to brown.

This method makes crisp, buttery bread, nice and crunchy. If you like your bread soft, then don’t use this method.
