Looking at Cooking and Garden Jobs with Mildred Swift

Mildred Conger

  • 2 cups buttermilk
  • 1 cup flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 3 tablespoons bacon fat
  • 2 cups cornmeal
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon soda

Sift dry ingredients together. Add to buttermilk. Add melted fat. Bake in well greased loaf pan for 1 hour at 350 degree. This is delicious after it is cold to slice thin and toast. For parties, cook this in orange juice cans, slice when cold, toast. This is wonderful served hot at barbecues. Mildred brought this recipe from Tennessee.
